Buenos Aires, November 18 (NA) -- The British Embassy in Argentina celebrated the 77th birthday of His Majesty King Charles III this Tuesday, in an event that brought together about 800 people and also marked the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The reception, held at the Ambassador's Residence, was the first major celebration led by Ambassador David Cairns since his arrival in the country. Among the attendees were Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno; Minister of Deregulation Federico Sturzenegger; and Minister of Justice Mariano Cuneo Libarona, among other political, business, cultural, and civil society leaders. The celebration was decorated with a special theme for the Bicentennial of the bilateral relationship, which included various activities throughout 2025. At the event, attended by the Argentine News Agency, Ambassador Cairns humorously expressed his surprise at moving into the official residence: "I couldn't believe I was going to live in such a nice palace; now I understand why it's the place to celebrate." He also highlighted the importance of the double celebration: "We are celebrating Charles III's birthday and the 200 years of relations between the two countries." The diplomat added that before his arrival, he felt confident in his performance, though he joked about recalling the monarch's skills: "I thought I could be a good diplomat until I saw Charles dancing tango and playing polo during his visit in 1999." Cairns also mentioned a particular detail of the party related to the history of bilateral ties. "A hundred years ago, the Torre de los Ingleses was built; a hundred years later, there's no money. We don't have a budget, so we made a cake with the Torre de los Ingleses and the Obelisco," he said with a laugh.
